CALteamDelta at Goddard House

Few performing groups enjoy a loyal audience like CALteamDelta.

This past year, at over 20 “Concert and Chat” events at the Goddard House Assisted Living in Brookline, the team had a dedicated band of twelve residents return for every event with warm hellos. The young musicians planned a series of weekly concerts and quickly found that music was a great conversation starter.

They met Floyd, a ballroom dancer who turned 100 in May, and Annette, a soft-spoken woman who had played in the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Soon they saw the residents open up in ways they did not expect. In addition to the regular concerts, CALteamDelta had opportunities to interact with the Alzheimer unit at Goddard, inspiring them to consider the
ways in which music can create memorable experiences for those struggling with memory loss.

Through a deepening wish to know the residents better and share their wonderful stories and musical experiences, the team interviewed a small group of residents on film, creating a collection of “Musical Biographies”. These were left behind for the residents, their families, and Goddard staff, representing the hours of shared experiences and conversation the team brought to the Goddard community and the special relationships that developed.
