Guitarist Jiyeon Kim Performs for Students at Alabama High School
Jiyeon visited a classroom of 25 beginner guitar students to perform, share techniques, and answer questions.
On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, before taping an episode of From the Top in Opelika, Alabama, 18-year-old guitarist Jiyeon Kim met with students of teacher and guitarist Patrick Bruce at Opelika High School to give a presentation about classical guitar.
Jiyeon currently attends the Cleveland Institute of Music and studies with Jason Vieaux. Despite having won top prizes in a number of international competitions, presenting for a classroom of students was a new experience for Jiyeon.
For the event, Jiyeon performed several standard pieces from the classical guitar repertoire, including the Paganini Caprice No. 24 (which she performed later that evening on the radio show).
Jiyeon discussed the importance of classical guitar performance, and how classical training has grown to inspire a number of genres, including rock and jazz. She also shared a number of techniques and routines - from the way she shapes her nails to the number of hours she practices daily.
The presentation wrapped up with a Q&A session where the students all had great questions. Many of them had never seen or heard a classical guitarist live, so this was a special event for them. A few even asked for her autograph!
Jiyeon believes this Arts Leadership experience helped inspire her performance for the radio taping at the Opelika Performing Arts Center later that day!
