Peer Leadership Program

The Iowa Makes Music Peer Leadership Program provides high school age classical musicians with intensive arts leadership training and one-on-one mentorship, empowering students to develop and lead their own arts leadership project in their home communities.

Each year, ten teenage musicians from the greater Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area participate in an in-depth one-day leadership workshop. Following the session, they receive mentoring and support as they design and implement their own unique service projects in the spring.

This program, which is part of From the Top’s Arts Leadership curriculum, encourages young performers to explore their potential as artists, leaders and arts advocates in their own communities. Peer Leader projects might range from teaching music to younger children, to playing at a hospital, or raising money for a good cause. Meet the 2008-2009 Peer Leaders.

The 2009-2010 Peer Leadership Program: Orchestra Iowa's home in Cedar Rapids provides the setting for our Leadership training.  Due to the program's intimate size (up to ten participants), we focus recruitment of peer leaders from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the surrounding communities.  This year's application deadline is January 29, 2010.  Applications will be available in late November. The leadership workshop will be held on Sunday, February 21 in Cedar Rapids.  Leaders will have until June 1, 2010 to complete their self-designed programs.
