Ray Ushikubo Performs for his Hometown’s Chamber of Commerce
9-year-old pianist and Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist wanted to find a way to make a difference in his community, and his school district gave him the perfect opportunity.
What: A presentation for the Riverside Chamber of Commerce at their monthly gathering, with the goal of introducing students who “represent more than just test scores” – Ray was among the performers invited to attend.
When: March 10, 2011
How: Ray was approached by Jacquie Paul of the Riverside Unified School District to present for the committee, along with other Riverside District students involved in the arts. Ray eagerly agreed, and chose to perform Chopin’s Etude Op. 25 No.1.
“I had been thinking about how I could contribute to my community since the community gave me my music education, which is the most important thing in my life. I hoped to share this with the community through my performance. There are many people who are not accustomed to classical music in the community. They think it is boring and not fun.”
